If you’re like me, you like to plan your points and miles vacations far in advance to have the most redemption options. However, sometimes this strategy doesn’t yield the best return on your points. Let me explain. This summer I booked a five night stay at Atlantis Bahamas using Marriott points. With the fifth night free benefit, this came out to 270,000 points for the stay. That sounded good enough to me at the time. Read on to see how you can modify your Marriott points booking to save valuable points in a matter of minutes.
What to Know About Modifying Your Marriott Reservation
With most rewards programs, it’s easy enough to move the dates of a hotel booked with points if the new dates are available even if you are past the cancellation period. What I didn’t know is that you can keep the same dates and room type but get points back if the price dropped since you booked it.

This quick modification saved me 70,000 Marriott points. I ultimately changed the dates of the trip to wait until my daughter was better and that actually saved me even more Marriott points.
How to Modify Your Marriott Points Booking
Modifying your Marriott points booking is easy enough. Simply head to your reservation under “My Trips” on the Marriott website or mobile app. Select “View/Modify Room” followed by “Modify Room”. From there, you can change the dates of the trip or simply reselect the same room/dates if doing so will save you points.

Final Thoughts
Even if you don’t need to change the dates of your Marriott points booking, it is worth checking back ahead of you travel dates to see if the rate has dropped. If so, you can easily get Marriott points deposited back to your account by modifying the reservation even if it’s after the cancellation period.
Love it!
